DMLS / SLM Metal 3D Printing Materials
Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS), also known as Selective Laser Melting (SLM), is the pinnacle of additive manufacturing technology. It utilizes high-power lasers to fully melt fine metal powders layer by layer, creating solid, dense metal parts with complex geometries that are impossible to machine or cast. At JUCHENG, we provide industrial-grade DMLS Metal 3D Printing services to the aerospace, medical, and automotive industries. Our facility processes a wide range of superalloys—from lightweight Aluminum and biocompatible Titanium to heat-resistant Inconel and tough Stainless Steel. We deliver fully functional metal components with mechanical properties comparable to wrought materials.
JUCHENG's Metal 3D Printing Capabilities
Metal printing requires strict process control and post-processing expertise. JUCHENG offers:
- High Density: Our optimization of laser parameters ensures parts achieve 99%+ density, delivering isotropic strength and reliability suitable for pressurized applications.
- Hybrid Manufacturing: DMLS parts often require precision tolerances. We combine 3D printing with CNC Machining to finish critical surfaces, threads, and bores to high precision (+/- 0.01mm).
- Heat Treatment: We perform essential post-print heat treatments (stress relief, aging, solution annealing) in-house to optimize the microstructure and mechanical properties of the metal.
- Support Removal: We expertly remove the metal support structures and offer surface finishing services like bead blasting and polishing.
Advantages of DMLS 3D Printing Materials
| Advantage | Detailed Description | Key Benefit |
| Complex Geometries | Can print internal channels (conformal cooling), lattice structures, and organic shapes. | Enables advanced thermal management and lightweighting designs impossible with CNC. |
| Part Consolidation | Merges multi-part assemblies into a single printed component. | Reduces assembly time, potential leak paths, and inventory costs. |
| High Strength & Performance | Parts possess mechanical properties similar to or better than cast metals. | Suitable for functional end-use parts in engines, turbines, and structural brackets. |
| Material Efficiency | Adds material only where needed; minimizes waste compared to subtractive CNC. | Cost-effective for expensive materials like Titanium and Inconel. |
| Rapid Tooling | Prints injection mold inserts with conformal cooling channels. | Reduces molding cycle times by up to 40% through efficient cooling. |

DMLS Printing Guidelines & Design Tips
- Support Structures: Metal printing requires rigid supports to anchor the part and dissipate heat to prevent warping. These supports must be mechanically removed.
- Stress Relief: Due to high thermal gradients, parts accumulate internal stress. Stress relief heat treatment is mandatory before cutting the part off the build plate.
- Surface Roughness: Raw DMLS parts have a matte, rough finish (Ra 3.2 - 6.3 µm). Critical sealing surfaces or bearing fits must be CNC machined post-print.
- Powder Removal: Designing escape holes is critical for hollow parts to allow trapped un-sintered powder to be removed.
Application Scenarios
- Aerospace: Fuel nozzles, turbine blades, lightweight structural brackets, satellite components (Titanium/Inconel).
- Medical: Custom orthopedic implants, surgical guides, dental copings (Titanium/Cobalt Chrome).
- Automotive: High-performance heat exchangers, topology-optimized suspension uprights (Aluminum).
- Tooling: Injection mold cores with conformal cooling channels (Maraging Steel).
