Aluminum Alloy 7050 CNC Machining Material
Aluminum Alloy 7050 is a premier aerospace-grade material developed specifically to overcome the limitations of 7075. While retaining extremely high strength, 7050 offers significantly improved toughness and resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC), particularly in heavy gauge plates (thicknesses over 3 inches). At JUCHENG, we specialize in "hog-out" machining—milling complex, monolithic structural components from solid 7050-T7451 blocks. Our large-format CNC machines and advanced material removal strategies ensure that we can deliver massive, stress-free aerospace bulkheads and frames with precision.

JUCHENG's 7050 Machining Capabilities
Processing large, thick blocks of high-strength aluminum requires specialized infrastructure:
- Deep Pocket Milling: We utilize high-torque spindles and extended-reach tooling to rapidly remove material (hogging) from thick 7050 blocks while maintaining wall thickness consistency.
- Large Format Capacity: Our gantry milling centers can accommodate large 7050 plates used for wing skins and fuselage frames.
- Distortion Control: We employ symmetrical machining techniques and utilize T7451 (stress-relieved) material to ensure that parts remain flat and true after removing up to 90% of the stock material.
- Surface Integrity: We ensure smooth transitions and finishes to prevent stress risers, which are critical for fatigue-sensitive aerospace parts.
Advantages of CNC Machining 7050
| Advantage | Detailed Description | Key Benefit |
| Superior Toughness | Higher fracture toughness than 7075-T6. | Resists crack propagation under load, increasing the safety factor of critical structures. |
| SCC Resistance | Excellent resistance to Stress Corrosion Cracking and exfoliation. | perform reliably in harsh environments without sudden failure. |
| Thick Section Strength | Retains its high mechanical properties even in very thick sections (unlike 7075 which loses strength in the core). | The #1 choice for machining bulkheads, spars, and heavy landing gear components. |
| High Strength | Comparable tensile strength to 7075. | Allows for lightweight designs that carry massive loads. |
| Good Anodizing | Accepts anodizing well for corrosion protection. | Can be hard anodized for wear surfaces or chromate converted for electrical conductivity. |
Technical Parameters & Material Standards
We primarily process 7050 in the "Overaged" temper for maximum stability:
| Grade Category | Specification | Characteristics & Ideal Uses |
| Aluminum 7050-T7451 | AMS 4050 / 4201 | Solution heat treated, stress-relieved by stretching, and overaged. This temper provides the best balance of strength, corrosion resistance, and fracture toughness. Uses: Heavy fuselage frames, wing skins, bulkheads, landing gear support beams. |
| Aluminum 7050-T7651 | Exfoliation Resistant | Processed specifically to resist exfoliation corrosion. Slightly higher strength than T7451 but slightly lower SCC resistance. Uses: Naval aircraft structures exposed to marine environments. |
CNC Machining Guidelines for 7050
- Material Removal Rates (MRR): 7050 allows for aggressive roughing. We use high-efficiency milling paths (trochoidal milling) to maximize MRR while keeping tool temperatures low.
- Coolant: High-pressure flood coolant is mandatory to evacuate the large volume of chips produced during hog-out operations.
- Workholding: Vacuum tables or dedicated fixture plates are used to hold large plates securely without inducing clamping stress that could warp the finished part.
- Finishing: A final light pass is always taken to ensure dimensional accuracy after the bulk of the material stress has been released.
Application Scenarios
- Commercial Aerospace: Fuselage frames, window frames, cargo door mechanisms.
- Military Aviation: Wing spars, bulkheads for fighter jets (high g-force loads).
- Defense: Missile bodies and structural fins.
- Motorsports: Chassis components requiring higher toughness than 7075.
